Join our Product Engineering Team, where we are dedicated to ensuring safe and reliable autonomous trucking systems. Our team works across hardware, software, and systems engineering to implement industry-leading functional safety practices. We are looking for a Staff Functional Safety Engineer to lead risk assessments, safety requirement development, and architecture evaluations to help us drive the future of safe and efficient autonomous trucking technology.
What You’ll Do:
As a Staff Functional Safety Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with ISO 26262, leading functional safety analyses, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to implement safety mechanisms across autonomous vehicle platforms.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the Functional Safety Manager and engineering teams to implement and fulfill functional safety requirements.
- Lead functional safety evaluations, guiding teams to achieve an acceptable safety level in system design.
- Identify areas for improvement within system and software designs and collaborate with design teams to implement safety enhancements.
- Support and conduct Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments (HARA) to define and refine safety goals.
- Perform and train engineers in key safety analysis techniques, including Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Dependent Failure Analysis (DFA).
- Lead safety requirement derivation, ensuring system architectures and designs meet safety concepts and best practices.
- Design and implement safety mechanisms to detect and mitigate system faults.
- Support the creation and review of all functional safety work products, including:
- Item Definition
- Safety Plans
- Risk Assessments
- Safety Concepts
- Test Cases and Validation Strategies
- Ensure all functional safety processes align with ISO 26262 and other applicable standards.
What You’ll Need to Succeed:
- Demonstrates competences and technical proficiencies typically acquired through:
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent with 7+ years relevant experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent with 10+ years relevant experience.
- Strong knowledge of automotive, heavy-duty trucks, or aerospace industries with a focus on functional safety.
- Expertise in ISO 26262 or IEC 61508 and demonstrated experience in applying these standards to complex safety-critical systems.
- Strong systems engineering experience, preferably in automotive software and hardware safety.
- Highly organized, able to handle multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining strong attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and leadership teams.
- Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to drive safety initiatives and influence design improvements.
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment, adapting to ambiguous and rapidly evolving challenges.
- Commitment to ethical handling of sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and impartiality.
